Culp Valley

Culp Valley Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"While the low desert swelters, the temperature hovers within a more moderate register at Culp Valley, 3,000 feet higher, the only designated camping area in the Anza-Borrego Desert where the heat on the cooler days of May, June, or September is bearable. July and August daytime temperatures there, typically in the 90s and 100s, are probably too warm for most people’s tastes."

"While the low desert swelters, the temperature hovers in a more moderate register at Culp Valley, 3000 feet higher. This is the only designated camping area in Anza-Borrego where the heat on the cooler days of May, June, or September is quite bearable. July and August daytime temperatures are probably too warm for most people’s tastes—typically the 90s and 100s. Stark, grayish boulders are piled up all around the floor of Culp Valley, thrusting upward into an azure sky. The west wind blows capriciously, often whistling eerily through the rocks. Nearby, out of sight from the valley, is a hillside spring surrounded by an oasis of green grass and shrubs. It’s this kind of contrast that makes hiking here especially rewarding."
