California Riding and Hiking Trail: Peña Spring and Culp Valley Overlook Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The California Riding and Hiking Trail reaches the varied elevations of Anza-Borrego. Beginning at 4,000 feet in chaparral, it descends through mountain valleys to the desert floor. The transition of vegetative communities is as interesting as the view—and the trip down the ridge offers spectacular vistas."

"This delightful, one-way (preferably downhill) route has a long and varied history. Originally a well-beaten Native American trail, it was used for many decades by cattlemen moving herds from the Mesa Grande area near Lake Henshaw to winter and spring grazing grounds at the mouths of Hellhole and Borrego Palm canyons. After World War II, the trail became a branch of the California Riding & Hiking Trail (CRHT). Today, while the statewide CRHT has largely fallen into disrepair, this particular desert segment continues to be frequently used (if not maintained much)." Read more

"Springtime wildflowers, interesting year-round cacti and boulder formations, plentiful wildlife, and an isolated atmosphere make this strenuous hike a paradise for those in good physical condition. A steady climb up (and then down) the sandy, rocky trail can make this walk grueling. Windy weather can be dangerous on the narrow, sometimes-steep trail. Outstanding Features: Steady ascent and descent with spring wildflowers, desert vegetation, breathtaking views of the desert valley, and wildlife." Read more

We found trail markings non-existent. There is a trailhead marker only. In hiking Rockhouse Canyon, we also found trail markings very sparse, especially when the trail leaves the wash!
