This hardy hike is best saved for off-season, when you can enjoy the distant views of the snowy high country, as well as the green, steep, rugged slopes of the lower ranges that surround Lightner Peak.

This trail was fairly strenuous, but provided a lot of wonderful views of the Kern River area. Also, the trail hadn't been travelled in a while when I hiked it, so it was very interesting to see many different animal tracks along the trail. Unfortunately, the trail has no markings stating the milage travelled, or pointing out the direction/distance to the hot springs advertised at the base of the trail. i had to turn around around 7 pm before the sun set and it became dark, so although I reached the summit I could not find the O'Brien hot springs.
