The impressive north wall of the Citadel looms high above the John Muir Trail in LeConte Canyon. The granite walls of Languille Peak and the Citadel rise over 3,000 feet above the Middle Fork of the Kings River, making LeConte Canyon one of the more dramatic sights in the Sierra backcountry. Joseph N. LeConte described the view down the canyon bearing his name. “The other side, as I feared, broke down in the savage black gorges of the Middle Fork region, which were choked with snow and frozen lakes far down below.” Pioneering Yosemite climber Don Goodrich made the first ascent of the northeast face of the peak in June 1951.
