Beautiful route in spectacular terrain. The ascent provides for a long day of hiking, with a substantial elevation gain. Mount Lamarck serves as a good introduction to the Evolution region of the Sierra. It’s no coincidence that both Mount Lamarck and Mount Darwin are in the Evolution region of the Sierra. Mount Lamarck is named for Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, the French botanist and zoologist whose theory of evolution was one of the inspirations for Darwin’s own theory. Science is a stern taskmaster, however. Though Lamarck is lauded for distinguishing between animals with and without backbones and for other contributions to science, he is most remembered for his theory of the inheritance of acquired characteristics, which was turned on its head by the acceptance of Darwin’s own theory of evolution through natural selection. But at least Lamarck got a peak named after him.
