Mosquito Flat to Pioneer Basin (Backpacking) Professional Review and Guide
"It’s a tough hike into high, lightly forested Pioneer Basin, but the spectacular views along the way and the opportunities for superb dayhiking from your scenic base camp deliver ample rewards. Pioneer Basin is on the north side of the canyon of Mono Creek; the south side is pierced by the famous Mono Recesses. Fourth Recess is a moderate dayhike from Pioneer Basin. The basin is ringed by peaks named for a quartet of California’s 19th Century robber barons (the “pioneers”), and peak-baggers can set their sights on Mts. Huntington, Stanford, Crocker, and Hopkins. Ramblers will enjoy simply following anglers’ trails, or going cross-country from lake to pond to lake.... Amateur botanists will delight in the variety of wildflowers encountered in season."
