Lake Sabrina to Midnight Lake Backpacking

Lake Sabrina to Midnight Lake (Backpacking) Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This trip offers unusually quick and easy access to some of the most spectacular alpine wilderness in California. A cluster of striking granite peaks surround the headwaters of Middle Fork Bishop Creek, with glacier-clad Mt. Darwin topping the bunch at 13,830 feet. With many beautiful, trout-filled lakes in this superlative landscape, it is easy to find sweet, out-of-the-way spots."

"Sabrina Basin is dotted with lakes—large and small, blue, aqua, green, and gray. The lakes are nestled below massive granite peaks with cliffs and sloping granitic blocks forming the shorelines. If you are not lucky enough to obtain a wilderness permit for an overnight stay, plan to day hike this trail. The beauty of this area is worth the price of sore toes and tired legs. The trail into the basin is not without its challenges. From its high-elevation start, the trail climbs to even thinner air, making for slow going on the steep and rocky ground. When crossing granite slabs, the trail disappears and some route finding skills are required. Streams must be forded, which is a wet proposition in early summer."

"This stunning hike enters a magnificent High Sierra basin where 13,000-foot spear-tip peaks soar above numerous spectacular treeline lakes. A shorter option leads to gorgeous Blue Lake, while a longer, demanding hike travels all the way to an alpine paradise at Hungry Packer Lake. From Bishop on US 395, drive west on CA 168 for 18 miles to the wide pullout just prior to the right turn signed for North Lake. The wide pullout is the official parking area for the hike. The trailhead, from which mileages were reckoned in this guide, actually lies 0.6 mile up the road, and it is necessary to walk along the road to reach the beginning of the trail."

Gerat hike, beautiful scenry, and good fishing. See my photos they say it all. Good for day hikes and multiple night stays. We stayed up there 4 nights and had a great time.

Went with friends to this beautiful setting. We did the hike in in one day, and it was pretty gruelling - and after a while seemingly endless. Midnight Lake is beautiful, though there are no really great camp sites there. The day hikes from a midnight lake campsite are amazing and I wanted to stay longer to explore the area more than I had. If you go, definitely bite the bullet and climb up to Blue Heaven Lake at 11,000 + feet. Also, don't miss TopseyTurvey lake. Great for boulder hopping and one of the most beautiful lakes i've been to yet.
