The 3,762-acre Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park lies along ten miles of beautiful Big Sur coast backed by 3,000-foot ridges. The Tanbark Trail is a steep climb up Partington Canyon to a grassy meadow with spectacular coastal views from the abandoned Tin House. The house was built during World War II on a 1 ,950- foot ridge. The path parallels Partington Creek through a dense forest of huge redwoods, tanbark oaks, and a lush understory of ferns. Switchbacks lead up the canyon wall to the ridge separating Partington and McWay Canyons in the heart of the park. The hike can be combined with the Fire Road Trail—Hike 47—for a 6.4-mile loop.
