Old Coast Road

Old Coast Road Professional Review and Guide

"A wonderful drive through coastal forest complete with moss-draped trees, ferns and gurgling brooks. A peaceful and beautiful alternative, if only for a short distance, to the traffic on Highway 1."

"Long before Bixby Bridge was constructed, the only way around the deep gap carved by Bixby Creek was an old dirt logging road. Today, the county road, referred to as Old Coast Road, is still well-traveled, mainly by residents who live in a handful of secluded, modest homes tucked within a few remaining old-growth redwood groves. This beautiful dirt road is anchored by Highway 1 (CA 1) at its north and south trailheads. Running 10.6 miles long, its condition is smooth, hardpacked dirt and wide enough for a single vehicle. It winds steeply up and down several ridges and ravines, and through redwood forests thick with lush understory, and over dry, open grassy hills. Occasional views of the Pacific Ocean and the rugged coastline are spectacular—just rewards for riders with strong endurance and climbing strength. Basic technical skills are all that’s needed to enjoy this ride. Several climbs range from two to three miles while steepness is mostly 7% grade with a few steeper sections. Fortunately, the route is interspersed with gentle stretches and fun, long descents. All in all, Old Coast Road is quite a workout, especially if you ride it as a 21.2-mile out-and-back (10.6 miles each way)."

"A convenient, relaxing drive through moss-covered sycamore and redwood forest. Enjoy pastoral scenes and intermittent views of the Pacific Ocean from high hills above Highway 1. Close to Andrew Molera State Park. A wide, well-graded shelf road, steep in places with no guard rails. Do not drive when wet. Suitable for most passenger cars."

Beautiful views everywhere. Any passenger car could make it so if you''re looking for something challenging this isn''t it. Definitely go if your looking for a scenic drive off the proverbial beaten path.

A Great drive to get started with your offroad experience, mild terrain mostly packed dirt road. The trail runs up the mountains and through redwood groves with running water streams. Amazing views of the pacific coast and forests. I would recommend starting at the southern point and work your way back up north, that way you will get to see the best views of the Bixby Bridge which is a must stop for photos! Make sure to add one or two of the many short hikes that go off HWY 1 down to the rocky coast line (they are easy to spot by the cars parked on the side of the highway) to enjoy breath taking views of the pacific coast.

Nice scenic drive. Rough road but any vehicle should be able to drive it just fine. Took about an hour to drive, stopped for pictures a couple times. Saw some deer on the trail but they quickly disappeared into the woods. Will do again someday.

Not my favorite - but my 25 yr old son's favorite - and I don't have an off-road great vehicle (Toyota Sienna mini-van) - but no great angst - not too difficult. We met no-one on the road! Solitude.

An easy, beautiful drive through the hills with excellent ocean views from the ridge tops. Watch for hikers and mountain bikers on the narrow road.
