There is no better ski summit in the Sierra. The scenery, alpine setting, rugged terrain, glaciers, cirques, and skiing are all superb. The distinct profile of The Thumb, the glacier at the base of the peak, and the prominent ramp through the headwall to the summit are clearly visible from Highway 395, near the town of Big Pine. There is a striking resemblance between The Thumb and Split Mountain, 4 miles to the south: The Thumb’s distinct south-facing ramp and vertical east and north faces are mirrored by Split Mountain’s prominent north-facing ramp and vertical east and south faces.
