Red Lake Professional Review and Guide
"A long drive over dirt roads followed by a steep, sweltering climb on rough, poorly maintained, and sometimes indistinct trail—why would anyone bother with a trip to Red Lake? The rewards for such an arduous adventure are solitude and scenery. So few people are drawn to the area that the Forest Service didn’t even have a quota for this trail until 2002, when all trails received one, whether they needed it or not. The few hardy souls who make the effort will be rewarded with a superbly picturesque lake backdropped by the impressive east face of Split Mountain (once known as South Palisade), where twin summits are separated by a narrow cleft. A high percentage of those on the trail are likely to be mountaineers bound for the easiest ascent of a fourteener in the Sierra outside of Mt. Whitney."
