Lightning Ridge Nature Trail

Lightning Ridge Nature Trail Professional Review and Guide

"The Lightning Ridge Nature Trail contours through the cool precincts of a wooded northeast-facing slope, then switchbacks upward to meet the Pacific Crest Trail on a windblown crest. You'll see Jeffrey pines, sugar pines, and white firs, and pass right through a beautiful glade of black oaks called Oak Dell--very nice in October when the leaves turn crispy gold and acorns fall. Near the crest are a number of stunted and distorted trees battered by winds and flattened by snow drifts that can pile up 10 feet high.

When you reach the PCT junction, try stepping off the trail and walking a short distance over to the top of the ridgecrest. The view from there is similar to that from Inspiration Point below, only a bit more panoramic. Old baldy and Mount Baden-Powell rise like massive sentinels, bracketing the rugged slopes and canyons of Sheep Mountain Wilderness."
