Crater Mountain Loop

Crater Mountain Loop Professional Review and Guide

"Travel through a fantastic volcanic landscape and view Crater Mountain, a young, recently active volcano, that rises abruptly 2200 feet from the valley floor. This large cone is surrounded by lava flow of over 12 square miles, but the ride on which it sits is granite. One the slope of the cone itself are a number of lave tubes. The basaltic formations in this area range from 10,000 to 100,000 years old, young in a geological sense. Crater Mountain is an Area of Critical Environmental Concern managed by the BLM and a Wilderness Study Area."
