Birch Lake

Birch Lake Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Dirt road access, a lowelevation trailhead, and an infrequently maintained trail combine to dissuade most hikers from even considering this trip to Birch Lake. Despite the perceived drawbacks, Birch Lake is quite scenic, nestled beneath the Sierra Crest in the broad canyon of aspen-lined Birch Creek and sandwiched between The Thumb and Birch Mountain. The sketchy trail dead-ends below the lake, making this a trip suitable for a dayhike or overnight backpack."

This is a tough trail - it's very steep and it isn't maintained at all or well-marked. There's very little shade so we started early in the morning to catch the sunrise and beat the heat. Birch Lake is an alpine lake that makes the hike worthwhile but not sure I would do this one again. If you do attempt it, make sure you have good directions and a map and the road there is unpaved so you may want a 4WD or other vehicle that can handle it.
