Dirt road access, a lowelevation trailhead, and an infrequently maintained trail combine to dissuade most hikers from even considering this trip to Birch Lake. Despite the perceived drawbacks, Birch Lake is quite scenic, nestled beneath the Sierra Crest in the broad canyon of aspen-lined Birch Creek and sandwiched between The Thumb and Birch Mountain. The sketchy trail dead-ends below the lake, making this a trip suitable for a dayhike or overnight backpack.
