Ancient Bristlecone Scenic Byway Professional Review and Guide
"A 36-mile paved and gravel road from Big Pine through the Inyo National Forest and the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest near the California-Nevada border. The Ancient Bristlecone Scenic Byway climbs thousands of feet from its start at 4,000 feet, to Patriarch Grove, which sits in the White Mountains at 11,200 feet. The two-lane road is paved until it reaches Schulman Grove and then is a graded dirt road to Patriarch Grove. With steep grades and tight curves, this byway beyond the paved section is not recommended for motor homes. There are frequent turnouts and traffic is fairly light. Special attractions: Hiking, limited camping, nature and geologic study, two National Recreation Trails, picnicking, and wildlife viewing. This eTrail is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more."
