A 36-mile paved and gravel road from Big Pine through the Inyo National Forest and the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest near the California-Nevada border. The Ancient Bristlecone Scenic Byway climbs thousands of feet from its start at 4,000 feet, to Patriarch Grove, which sits in the White Mountains at 11,200 feet. The two-lane road is paved until it reaches Schulman Grove and then is a graded dirt road to Patriarch Grove. With steep grades and tight curves, this byway beyond the paved section is not recommended for motor homes. There are frequent turnouts and traffic is fairly light. Special attractions: Hiking, limited camping, nature and geologic study, two National Recreation Trails, picnicking, and wildlife viewing. This eTrail is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more.

This is a bucket list excursion. These trees are the oldest living things on the planet. How do you top that? Incredibly unique and surreal. The ride in is fairly easy. The visitor center is terrific. The Schumann Grove has three good trails However if you continue on the dirt road to the upper "Patriarch" grove, it is 12 miles of washboard bumps, rarely over 10 mph, most 6+ mph. It is a slow, bumpy ride. You won't need all wheel drive, but you will need a sturdy vehicle and patience. The road takes you up over 11,000 feet and the views are fantastic

This is an absolute beauty of a trip. These trees are some of the, if not the, oldest known trees. One absolute mammoth is the Patriarch tree. This is a must see. Elevation is about 10,000 feet so be prepared. There are self guided walks near the ranger station. This leads you past some real beauties. Bring your camera. In the gift shop, you can even purchase a Jonsteen Bristlecone seed kit to try and grow your own. Enjoy!
