Morteros Trail Professional Reviews and Guides

"A broad, sandy trail leads from the parking lot up the rise to the site of a prehistoric village set against the rock-strewn hillside. The slight elevation gain provides a sweeping view of Little Blair Valley, stretching to the northwest. Huge obelisk-like boulders frame large horizontal granite stones, in which the morteros, or mortar stones, were worn over a thousand years of grinding by the Kumeyaay Indians. Fortunately, the site has been respected by visitors and remains in the same condition as when the Indians departed, giving it a hallowed feeling."

This trail is really more of a "nature" trail in length than a hike, but is definitely worth the stop due to its cultural and historic value. Since it's so near the Petroglyphs trail, we recommend combining the two. Its close proximity to Highway 78 and the west end of the park makes it a great little stop on your way in our out of Anza Borrego. (Date hiked: April 12, 2009.)
