San Gorgonio Nine Peaks Challenge Professional Review and Guide
"The great San Bernardino Divide forms the backbone of San Gorgonio Wilderness and is the highest ridge in California south of the Sierra Nevada. The west end is anchored by San Bernardino Peak, while the east end culminates above treeline on the towering summit of San Gorgonio Mtn. A well-built trail, constructed by the Forest Service in 1938, runs the length of the gently undulating crest, passing seven other minor peaks along the way. A worthwhile challenge is to climb all nine of these summits; the undertaking has become so popular that the San Gorgonio Wilderness Association sells an “I Climbed the Nine Peaks” arm patch to commemorate the deed. Boy Scout troops do the hike as a 3-day backpacking trip. Experienced mountaineers can do it in one long day. This trip is recommended for those who already know the area well because it usually involves some hiking before dawn and/or after dark. Good navigation skills are required to locate the minor peaks on the ridge. Although this is a very strenuous route, it is easier than the other Nine Peaks challenges around Mt. Baldy and the Desert Divide."
