Detailed Trail Descriptions from Our Guidebooks

"Weir Canyon Wilderness Park (the name wilderness might be stretching the definition a bit, but it’s certainly a wilderness compared to the developed areas of the Anaheim Hills) is one of those great so-near-yet-so-faraway places in Orange County to take a hike. It’s a pleasure to report it’s the park—not nearby subdivisions— that’s been extending its boundaries farther into the hills toward the toll road (Highway 241). Geographers say the Anaheim Hills comprise a long, low ridge extending west from the Santa Ana Mountains and rising above Santa Ana Canyon and the Santa Ana River. Weir Canyon Trail offers a gentle introduction to the considerable pleasures of these hills." Read more
"The Weir Canyon Loop weaves in and out of small side canyons high on the west wall of Weir Canyon. The westward views overlook the Orange County basin while the eastward views highlight the undeveloped foothills and canyon landscape, stretching to the peaks of the Santa Ana Mountains." Read more

"This great loop hike on publicly owned land is suitable for the entire family. Although adjacent to newer development, you are afforded great views to the east into the greater Weir Canyon Wilderness Area (managed by the Irvine Ranch Conservancy) and the Santa Ana Mountain Range." Read more

I've done this loop twice. It's very near my house yet, it has a "wilderness" feel to it, even though it's right in the middle of some of the densest housing in the world. The loop is an ideal distance for someone in my shape (about 3.5 miles) Some quibbles: the parking is non-existent - there's a couple spots on the street near the trail head. Also, the trail is poorly marked with a number of "Ys" that can get you easily lost. Most of them won't take you to far out of your way. if I do it a couple more times I will get the directions figured out. Overall, a very pleasing view and moderate workout. Watch out for the occasional mountain biker. Best time to walk it is in "winter."

Just after some heavy rains the hills get vibrant green on this trail. A truly beautiful scenic hike hidden in the middle of a busy world. This trail is great for mountain bikers and trail runners as well.
