Newell Open Space Preserve

Newell Open Space Preserve Professional Review and Guide

"This is a beautiful hike through a former ranch, the Newell Preserve, with its bald hills, small canyons, and great views. The highlight of the hike is the traverse of the ridge that forms the boundary between Napa and Solano Counties. It has awesome views to both the east and west.

The city of American Canyon at the southern end of Napa County is one of the fastest- growing parts of the Wine Country. Numerous housing developments have filled in the level strip of land between the Napa River and some of the southernmost hills of the enormous North Coast Range. The Newell Preserve was donated to the city to help hem in the growing sprawl and keep it from encroaching on the hills to the east of the city. It prevented growth on the hills, but for a long time the preserve was cut off from the community because there were no roads affording public access to the park. Fortunately that was remedied when a new trail was built that connected a parking area near one of the housing developments to the network of old ranch roads that wind through the preserve. Hikers now have free and open access to the beautiful hills that boast awesome views and quiet seclusion amid canyons and windswept ridgelines."

"Newell Open Space Preserve encompasses 642 acres in the eastern hills above the city of American Canyon. The preserve’s land stretches from American Canyon to the Solano County line, connecting with Lynch Canyon Open Space in Solano County. In 1999, Jack and Bernice Newell donated the ranchland to the city to preserve the hillsides, protect wildlife, and offer outdoor recreation to the public. The land is a raptor migration resting area and forms a protected wildlife corridor of 10,000 acres, extending eastward to Suisun Marsh. The preserve contains rolling grasslands, coast live oak, and bay laurel woodlands. Cattle still graze on the property. Remote dirt roads and footpaths, open to hikers and bikers, weave through the hills."
