"Newell Open Space Preserve encompasses 640 acres in the eastern hills above the city of American Canyon. The land stretches from American Canyon to the Solano County line, connecting with Lynch Canyon Open Space in Solano County. In 1999, Jack and Bernice Newell donated the ranchland to the city to preserve the hillsides, protect wildlife, and offer outdoor recreation to the public. The land is a raptor migration resting area and forms a protected wildlife corridor of 10,000 acres, extending eastward to Suisun Marsh. The preserve contains rolling grasslands, coast live oak, and bay laurel woodlands. Cattle still graze on the property. Dirt roads and footpaths, open to hikers, bikers, and equestrians, weave through the hills."
