Imagine your own mountain range! Along this hike, you’ll have its scenery almost all to yourself. Because the Summit Trail offers views up and down this compact range, you rapidly become well acquainted with and embrace it. With high-trail views rivaling those of the Sierra Nevada’s highest peaks, you can see over 100 miles in most directions on clear days—well into desert lands of northwestern Nevada and southern Oregon, and west through south into northeastern California. Prominently northwest stands the Crater Lake rim 140 miles away; west, Mt. Shasta 100 miles away; southwest, Lassen Peak 90 miles away; and south, Tahoe-area summits as much as 150 miles away.
