Ash Creek Wildlife Area is in the heart of Big Valley, with an elevation of about 4,100 feet. Big Lake/Ajumawi is a part of Fall River Valley with an elevation of about 3,300 feet. These two valleys are broad, flat plains lying along the drainage of the Pit River, separated by the Big Valley Mountains. Both Lassen Peak and Mount Shasta are visible from these valleys, rendering this region one of the most scenic in California. Specialty birds: Resident—Sage Grouse, Short-eared Owl, Black-billed Magpie. Summer—Western and Clark’s Grebes; White-faced Ibis; Cinnamon Teal; Osprey; Swainson’s Hawk; Sandhill Crane; Long-billed Curlew; Black Tern; Bank Swallow, and many more.
