Mt. Lowe: Mt. Lowe Railway Trail Professional Review and Guide

"Professor Thaddeus Lowe, Civil War balloonist, man of fame and fortune, was the quintessential California dreamer. His dream was to build a railway into—and a resort complex atop—the San Gabriel Mountains high above Pasadena.

In the 1890s, his dream became a reality. During the height of its popularity, millions took Professor Lowe’s “Railway to the Clouds” to fine hotels and spectacular views of Southern California. Until it was abandoned in the 1930s, it was the Southland’s most popular tourist attraction."

Great Trail! We hiked to the hotel/railway only, it's about 2.7 miles to that part. It's an aggressive single track all the way up and I would recommend leaving early. It took us 1.5 hrs to get to the hotel. It's a busy trail and it should be! Scenic route all the way up with lots of actual visual history at the top where the remnants of the hotel and railway lay. Bring your camera! Have a breakfast spot picked out for after this hike because you'll have an incredible appetite when you finish! Have Fun!

This is one of the must hikes in Southern California. History reviles itself around every corner and every step. A challenging hike that should be studied prior to taking the first step. Read the history of the Mount Lowe Railway, the Dawn Mine and the Mount Lowe Resort. This is a real colorful chapter in the history of the area. Stand on the site of the Echo Mountain stage of the railway and yell through the Echo Phone. Then start the trek to the Mount Lowe Resort following the winding train tracks to the site of the resort. Walk a little farther to Inspiration Point for a 3,000 sq mile view of Southern California. Make sure you go on a clear day in the LA basin (I know that is hard). The day I went it was not clear so I missed the view from Inspiration Point. Well that means I have to do it again when the weather clears. Check out my pictures on Facebook.com

the scenery and history all over this trail are fascinating. the ruins of the hotel and inn are very cool and add to the adventure. we took the sam merril trail to echo mountian to explore the ruins. then the castle canyon trail to inspiration point. castle canyon is a very tough trail, narrow, rocky, and nothing but up, up, up. but it is beautiful and much less crowded. went up to the top of mount lowe and then back down the railway trail. all the trails are very well marked and the historical markers are interesting to read. total mileage was 15 miles and 4000 ft elevation gain and loss. it took us about 7 hours with a 30 min lunch break and a very quick pace the whole hike (and i definatly felt it the day after) make sure you check the weather before you go, we had very thick fog the whole day and missed what i am sure were amazing views! overall, an incredibly challenging but enjoyable hike that i cant wait to experience again on a clear, cool day!

Steep trail, fairly challenging, but worth the trip from a historic point of view. Good for locals who thought they knew everything about southern California.
