Standing apart from nearby peaks, Viejas Mountain can be seen from many parts of metropolitan San Diego as a dusky, obtusely triangular feature along the eastern horizon. A trail of rudimentary construction up the west slope offers the only straightforward passage to the summit. The trek up this pathway is definitely tedious and unrewarding during hot or hazy weather, but it’s well worth it when the weather is both clear and cool.

This trail has no shade and can get pretty hot even when the temps are in the high 70's. The trail is easy to follow, but steep and some loose rocky areas. The views are pretty spectacular and I would have rated this trail higher if there would have been some shade along the way. Jerry Shad's estimate of 3 hours trip was about perfect unless you really want a good cardio workout. If you're a photographer and want some nice images, you are not likely to be disappointed.

Pretty much a straight grade from bottom to top with only 1 stretch of levelish ground. Great views the whole way. I only saw 3 others on the way down.

Very steep and rocky. One of the best sites to see all over the east county of San Diego.

My 3 kids (7,6,5), my wife, her friend and her kid (6), did this in about 2.5 hours. It was rather tough as we are just the average family looking for some things to do on the weekends. Our kids are fairly experienced hikers and after this hike, I'm glad they are or we wouldn't have made it.

This trail is very steep so it is ideal for a quick afternoon or evening exercise hike. The trail is quite rocky but very easy to follow. The views are wonderful. The top is very windy and cool, once I was even caught in a snow flurry!
