In 1997, Cleveland National Forest, in cooperation with the Sweetwater Authority (a water utility serving south San Diego County), opened a new fishing-access trail to Loveland Reservoir outside Alpine. The trail descends from the parking lot and reaches, after only 0.2 mile of descent, the high-water level of the reservoir. From that point, you can work your way either a short distance west or a longer distance east along the lake shore.
