Lost Cabin Trail Professional Review and Guide

"A vigorous loop hike through a variety of lofty terrain so beautiful that one of the trails (Lost Cabin) has been designated a National Recreational Trail. For those interested in a challenging hike, this combination of four different trails provides just that. Because the distance is lengthy, some consideration should be given to camping in the Black Elk Wilderness, named for the famous Oglala medicine man who was present as a young teenager at the Battle of the Little Bighorn.

Water is plentiful, though it must be purified, and primitive wilderness campsites are abundant. Before pitching your tent, however, check that you are not camped in a patch of poison ivy. Practice zero-impact ethics."

I made the loop from Willow Creek horse camp along the Lost Cabin trail #2 to Harney Peak and then back to Willow Creek on trail #9. It was Monday so I had the whole trail and all of Harney Peak to myself--never saw a soul. The Lost Cabin trail and trail to Harney Peak was all in good condition with only occasional snowy spots. Trail #9--going down, down down was steep, slippery with packed melting snow and quite muddy, but some of the views on that part of the trail were very impressive. It was sunny with a breeze--comfortable for walking in shorts and a t-shirt, but stopping was cool. I started the loop at 8:00 AM and was back at the trailhead--finished by 3 PM. Great wau for me to celebrate my 57th birthday. JK
The Harney Peak area offers stunning views and a good variety of hiking. Take the Willow Creek trail to Sylvan and back down to Willow Creek via Lost Cabin for a truly scenic hike. You will run into far less people on this trek and there are countless locations to spend a night tucked into the granite walls. For an less strenuous hike start at Sylvan, but expect far more people!
