Sycamore Rim

Sycamore Rim Professional Review and Guide

"The Sycamore Rim Trail (also known as the Rim Trail), a beautiful hiking route that runs along a portion of the rim of Sycamore Canyon, offers a wonderful look at the unique ecosystems along the Mogollon Rim.

Established in 1979, the Sycamore Rim Trail was originally marked by frequently placed rock cairns. In 1992, however, tread construction was completed along the entire 11-mile loop. With the exception of a couple of short stretches, the
Sycamore Rim Trail is level, and several other trailheads offer convenient access throughout the loop."

"A great hike for a hot summer day, this loop on the north side of the San Francisco Peaks uses the Abineau Canyon Trail to reach scenic views of the north side of 12,633-foot Humphreys Peak, and then follows the old Abineau Canyon Road through fine aspen stands to return via the Bear Jaw Trail and its historic aspen carvings.

Hiking counterclockwise gets all of the climbing over with pretty quickly, and the Abineau Canyon opens up as you reach the avalanche runout zone."

"28 miles west of Flagstaff at the head of Sycamore Canyon. This singletrack skirts the rim of Sycamore Canyon at its headwaters and offers views of the rugged Sycamore Canyon Wilderness. The riding is mostly smooth, fast singletrack."

This is a lovely ride into the canyon and along the rim. There are some very challenging rocky sections for skilled riders and some hike-a-bike sections for all mere mortals, including a stream crossing. This is not just a smooth cruise with the occassonal rocky patch, this is not a ride for novices. Be prepared for wet and rocky challenges and enjoy.
