Christmas Pass Trail Professional Review and Guide
"The Christmas Pass Trail sweeps down, following the line of the Mohawk Mountains, crossing the wide, flat, sandy Mohawk Valley to join El Camino del Diablo Trail at Tule Well. The route is an easy one and it makes a popular entry point to El Camino. The trail travels almost entirely within the Barry M. Goldwater Air Force Range and the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge. A permit is essential for both these areas. In addition, only 4WD vehicles are permitted in the wildlife refuge.
Special Attractions: Easy drive wholly contained within the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument; The green oasis of Quitobaquito Springs; Access to backcountry hiking trails and picnic areas. High-clearance 4WDs are preferred, but any high-clearance vehicle is acceptable. Expect a rough road surface; mud and sand are possible but will be easily passable. You may encounter rocks up to 6 inches in diameter, a loose road surface, and shelf roads, though these will be wide enough for passing or will have adequate pull-offs."
