Wasson Peak Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Divided into east and west units, the Saguaro National Park encompasses tracts of desert mountain terrain on either side of Tucson. Saguaro National Park West takes in the Tucson Mountains, the highest summit of which is Wasson Peak (elevation 4,687 feet). Providing the shortest access to the top is the King Canyon Trail."

"Most hikers climb popular Wasson Peak, the highest summit in the Tucson Mountain section of Saguaro National Park, via the long Hugh Norris Trail. Instead, this equally scenic but less-traveled loop uses the King Canyon and Sweetwater Trails to reach the summit, then returns via a short section of the Hugh Norris Trail and the Sendero Esperanza and Gould Mine Trails. The views of the Tucson area and the Santa Catalina and Rincon Mountains from the 4687-foot peak are especially fine."

What a great, great hike! My husband and I got up early and started hiking by 7 a.m. Part of the trail was still in shade when we started hiking, so climbing to the summit of Wasson Peak was very pleasant.
The views from the summit were spectacular. Simply a must-do hike!

This one is my favorite hike in this part of the Saguaro National Park and I fully agree with the author that it is evenly scenic but with much less traffic than the Hugh Norris Trail. Especially in springtime when the wildflowers are blooming, the King Canyon offers spectacular views and a wide diversity of flowers, making the quite strenuous ascent to the intersection with the Hugh Norris Trail worthwhile. Not to forget the view from the peak. Returning using the Hugh-Norris Trail and the Sendero Esperanza Trail leads to different types of vegetation from sandy grassland to rocky areas, where only cacti exists. As a summary: Get your hiking-shoes and start!
