A day hike to the summit of Wasson Peak. This trail is the premier hiking route in the Tucson Mountain Unit of Saguaro National Park. The trail begins by climbing up a small canyon studded with outcrops of granite and tall saguaros. Early views across the broad basin of the Avra Valley highlight the Roskruge, Waterman, and Silver Bell ranges as well as the loftier Santa Rosa Mountains beyond them. Upon cresting the ridgetop, the trail encounters a craggy summit. The trail climbs gradually as it skirts to the north of this high point. The footpath meets the ridgeline beyond the aforementioned peak and follows its crest eastward with occasional dips onto north-facing slopes. A magnificent reef of red rhyolite graces the flats to the north, and is topped by Panther Peak at its west end and Safford Peak in the center.
