This hike follows the southernmost leg of Mazatzal Divide Trail, which roughly follows the top of the range that separates the Verde River drainages from the Salt River drainages. The first part of this hike, up, around, and then just past Mount Peelry, can be done as a moderate day hike. The second part, walking along the ridgeline roughly north to Bear Springs Saddle, would be an easy overnight, except for trail conditions that make for a moderate hike, with stretches of you've-got-to-be-kidding. This hike, along with the rest of Divide Trail, is part of Arizona Trail (AZT), which runs from Mexico to Utah. OUTSTANDING FEATURES: Dramatic vistas, wildlife, the death and life of forests after fire.
