Papago Park

Papago Park Professional Review and Guide

"Centrally located, North Mountain provides Phoenix residents with an excellent hike for daily exercise. The North Mountain National Trail is short, steep, paved, and accessible nearly around the clock."

More Papago Park Professional Reviews and Guides

"The unusual pink sandstone buttes in Papago Park have always caught the fancy of visitors and area residents, making the park’s history as colorful as its trademark geologic oddities. A thousand years ago, the Hohokam used the park’s most distinctive landmark, Hole-in-the-Rock, to mark solstices and equinoxes.

In the nineteenth century, the federal government used the area as a temporary reservation for the Maricopa and Pima tribes. The area was designated a national monument in 1914 (Congress revoked monument status in 1932). During WWII, the park was still well outside Phoenix city limits, so the military erected a German prisoner-of-war camp on site; some of those buildings remain in use at the Phoenix Zoo."

"An easy loop hike that makes a great introduction to desert hiking."

Easy trail with very slight elevation. The rock formations are very interesting, especially in early morning or late afternoon light.
