Springerville is a small town (approximately 2,000 people) set amid great beauty. While the area is miles away from the Colorado or New Mexico border, the pottery found here is similar to that found in the Four Corners region. The “House of the Badlands,” or Casa Malpais, overlooks the Little Colorado River’s Round Valley. From the site, there is a breathtaking view of the White Mountains, which lie to the south. What makes this archaeological site so special is that the museum and field laboratories are open to the public. Guided tours are available for a fee, and participatory workshops are given in both education and excavation. This chapter from the DayTrips series describes many fascinating, exciting, (and many free of charge) things to do, most within a two-hour drive of Phoenix.
