From Sierra Vista, you can see the Huachuca Mountains rising like ramparts behind the fort that shares their name. Enter the mountains on Carr Canyon Road, and shortly you find the Carr House Information Center. This former ranch at the base of the hills, which is open on weekends, offers exhibits on area flora, fauna, and history. You can hike the nature trail at any time. After the information center the road continues, switchbacking up more than 2,000 feet past occasional waterfalls and splendid views over the San Pedro River valley. On your way up, look for the Carr Reef, a band of sheer, white quartzite running along the mountainside.
