A day hike or backpack to the Huachuca Crest trail. This footpath climbs vigorously onto warmer slopes above the canyon, entering a scrubland of live oak. As it traces these higher, drier slopes, openings in the woods unveil fine views down canyon. Agaves and yuccas take advantage of these openings to gain a foothold in the sunshine. Here, cold night air sinks and pools on the canyon floor, creating local growing conditions that are too cold in winter for most desert plants. The track passes some prospect diggings before returning to the north side of the canyon, where it becomes a narrow footpath. This footpath climbs vigorously onto warmer slopes above the canyon, entering a scrubland of live oak.

In early November the first two miles of this trail typically have some very nice fall color.
