This popular route linking I-17 and Sedona is best suited for a high-clearance vehicle because of the rockiness of the road around Bear Wallow Canyon. The best direction for travel is east to west because the descent into Bear Wallow Canyon gives the better views. Special Attractions: Unequaled view of red rock country above Sedona; Deep Bear Wallow Canyon. High-clearance vehicles are preferred, but not necessary. This trail is dirt roads, but may have rocks, grades, water crossings, or ruts that make clearance a concern in a normal passenger vehicle. The trail is fairly wide, so that passing is possible at almost any point along the trail. Mud is not a concern under normal weather conditions.

not for the average auto. you really need a high clearance, 4wd vehicle for this one, as evidenced by a time about 7 to 8 years ago, when conditions on I-17 caused some police officer to detour traffic to sedona via schnebly hill road. the results were not pretty at all. cars, trucks, busses, and motorcycles were detoured down schnebly hill road to get south. several vehicles did not make it. it took a week and a half to tow vehicles out. several vehicles were severely damaged. i don't know what happened to the motorcycle. this road is now closed during the winter to avoid any more mistakes like that. however, if you get a chance to take this tour from sedona, by all means, do it. you can bring a camera but it can't really do it justice. one of the most scenic in all of arizona.

Its the second time I run this trail. First time I drove from Sedona in my F350 RWD and wasn't that bad. I did my last trip on Nov.26 in my stock FJ cruiser coming from I17 and the road was not so pleasant. Probably was washed out because its full of sharp rocks making the ride very bumpy. I have seen commercial jeeps and rented ATV going much faster but I guess they don't care about their vehicles. This road its in bad conditions probably because they don't want too much traffic on it. I gave two stars to this trail because of the road condition and FIVE for the scenery.
