"This hike in the Munds Mountain Wilderness takes you up a historic road, and offers excellent views of Mitten Ridge, Bear Wallow Canyon, Munds Mountain, and Sedona. This is the old Schnebly Hill Road, which was originally built as a wagon road from Sedona to the Mogollon Rim and on to Flagstaff.

It is now closed to motorized vehicles and makes a fine hiking trail with a panoramic view. Because of the west-facing slope, the dominant vegetation is chaparral brush. Near the top, there is a dense stand of Gambel oak, a small, slender deciduous tree about 20 to 30 feet high. Gambel oaks often favor the slopes just below escarpments or rims. Permit: Red Rock Pass required for parking."

"This hike in the Munds Mountain Wilderness takes you up a historic, closed road and offers excellent views of Mitten Ridge, Bear Wallow Canyon, Munds Mountain, and Sedona.

From the parking area look across the road and up. You will see an old road descending the slopes from the left (southeast). It nearly comes down to the present road and then does a switchback to the right and parallels the road. Walk south down the main road about 100 yards until you can climb up to reach the old road. Follow the old road back to the left (north), around the switchback, and then southward. This is the old Schnebly Hill Road, a former wagon road that connected Sedona to Flagstaff via the Mogollon Rim."

While the trailhead is difficult to find, and trail route hard to follow, the views were worth it. This would appear to be not only the best, but the least used of trails in the Sedona area. I suspect it is among the least used because of remoteness and signage problems. The views, however, are tantamount to flying over the red rocks in a small plane, and there are views in other directions as well.

This has great views of Sedona - if you leave the trail once you get on top of Munds Mountain. I found yellow traffic tape blazing a trail to the rim of a canyon that overlooked Sedona - that was well worth the trip. The top of Munds Mountain is pretty barren, though. The climb up is the best part.
