Mitten Ridge and Cow Pies Professional Review and Guide
"Cow Pies and Mitten Ridge are considered a Sedona vortex center. The Cow Pies are multilevel, flat red rock mounds with pathways leading from one formation to the next. Although the hike is relatively level, from the edge of the enormous slickrock mounds are world-class views into Bear Wallow Canyon below. Mitten Ridge is a long band of weathered, jagged red rock formations and sculptures forming the northwest wall of the canyon. The trail contours along the base of Mitten Ridge, offering close-up views of its columns, caves, and buttes."
--Robert Stone, Day Hikes in Sedona, Arizona (Day Hike Books).
We are repeat visitors to the Sedona area and have hiked many, many of the "shorter" hikes (less than 6-8 mi) in the area. This is my favorite of the dozens of trails we have taken. The Cow Pies area is interesting for it's unusual rock formations, but the real treat arrives at the saddle of Mitten Ridge. While I have visited most of the Vortex sites with no effect, the scenic grandeur from the top of Mitten Ridge was a true "mountain top" experience -- majestic, serene, peaceful.
In the 3 or 4 hours we spent on this trail, we saw a total of 8 people -- and 6 were within a 1/2 mile of the parking lot!
This hike epitomizes the Sedona experience to me!
