An easy hike to a less-visited canyon in the Red Rock-Secret Mountain Wilderness. The mouth of Long Canyon is more than a mile from the trailhead, so the first portion of the hike is through open pinyon-juniper flats. This pleasant section of the trail offers tantalizing views of the canyon walls ahead, as well as Mescal Mountain to the south. As you pass the north tip of Mescal Mountain, you’ll reach the wilderness boundary and the junction with the Deadman Pass Trail. The canyon walls gradually close in as you continue, and the trail starts to fade out. It’s possible to continue the hike cross-country and also to explore several side canyons.
