The Verde Valley route approaches Cathedral Rock, Sedona's most photographed red rock formation, from the west. The trail parallels the south shore of Oak Creek to a meadow with awesome views of this red rock landmark. The trail follows a canyon along the base of Cathedral Rock.

The directions for this hike are horrible. If you go through the second gate and head south, you will be on a completely different trail and will lead away from Cathedral Rock. Your best bet is to continue along Oak Creek until you near Cathedral Rock and then decide on your approach if you'd like to climb it. There are some great swimming holes along this section of Oak Creek, including a deep one that has ropes for swinging. There are also some channels for body rafting that are as good as Slide Rock State Park.
