"Visit a popular landmark in the McDowell Mountains, enjoy commanding views of Fountain Hills and north Scottsdale, and hike through rugged and rocky desert. If you enjoy rock climbing, the Tom’s Thumb area also offers challenging climbs. You need not be a climber to seek out this famous McDowell landmark, however. Hikers find plenty of reasons to make a short trek to visit this rock. The Tom’s Thumb Trailhead provides easy access and ample parking, and a short but challenging trail takes visitors right to the base of Tom’s Thumb. McDowell Sonoran Preserve comprises more than 30,000 acres of mountain wilderness, making it the largest city preserve in the United States." Read more

This is one of my favorite hikes. There is no water at the trailhead, though there are restrooms. The first 45 minutes of the hike is fairly steep...fantastic views.......then it sort of levels off and the rest of the hike to the thumb is great. Once you get up to the base of the thumb, you might be treated with a few rope climbers scaling to the top. If not, just sit back and take in the views. Right next to the trailhead is the trail to Marcus landslide.

This park has some great trails. Get there early as parking fills up quick. This is a very popular spot so if you are looking for a hiking trip where it will be just you and the trail, this is not the place.
