Hospital Flat Campground Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Driving the 35 miles up the Swift Trail from 2,900 feet elevation to 9,000 feet is ecologically comparable to driving from Mexico to Canada. The road winds its way up the Pinaleño Mountains through saguaros and ocotillos to juniper and pinyons and eventually up to the ferns and towering pines.

The Pinaleños (a mixed Apache/Spanish coinage meaning “many deer”) are considered a sky island, with the highest peak, Mount Graham, reaching 10,720 feet. The ecosystem at the top of the mountains is so different than the lower desert that the plants and animals here are almost completely isolated from similar populations in other regions."
