South Fork of Cave Creek

South Fork of Cave Creek Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"A long day hike or backpack from South Fork Picnic Area to the Chiricahua Crest trail, 6.8 miles one way.

This popular trail is easy to follow as it runs along the South Fork but becomes increasingly tricky to find as it climbs toward its junction with the Chiricahua Crest Trail. The last several miles cross heavily burned country where the trailbed was damaged by heavy erosion in the wake of the 1994 fire. The lower canyon is noted for its diversity of both plants and birds, including the rare elegant trogon and the blue-throated hummingbird. The canyon provides spectacular displays of fall color in late October."
