A backpack from the Gila Valley to the Ash Creek trail. As the canyon penetrates the mountains, the rounded bulk of Shingle Mill Mountain guards its western entrance; a much craggier summit that bears no name stands sentinel to the east. The trail climbs into desert grasslands on the northern slopes of Shingle Mill Mountain, but these soon give way to a desert upland community of scrubby oak, juniper, and manzanita as the trail continues upward. The track fades on several occasions as it crosses gulches choked with enormous boulders.
