One of several classic loops into the remote Mazatzal Mountains starting from Sheep Bridge on the Verde River, this loop uses the little-used Verde River Trail, Wet Bottom Mesa Trail, Red Hills Trail, and Dutchman Grave Trail to loop from Sonoran Desert to the pine-covered crest and back. The Willow Fire burned much of the Mazatzal Mountains in June 2004. Expect eroded trails and deadfall at higher elevations. Cross the Verde River on Sheep Bridge and turn left on the Verde River Trail at the junction with the Willow Spring Trail. The Verde River Trail crosses Sycamore Creek, then climbs into the Sonoran Desert hills east of the Verde River. Just 1.2 miles from the trailhead, stay left at the junction with the Dutchman Grave Trail, which will be the return trail.
