At night the city lights of Phoenix are clearly visible from the ridges of the Sierra Estrella, “star mountains,” snugged up against the southwest corner of the Gila River Indian Reservation. So close do they seem that a hiker familiar with the layout of the sprawling metropolis can easily identify street grids in the light patterns. Yet, this small desert wilderness mountain, rising steeply above the desert floor, can seem as wild and remote as any patch of wilderness landscape in southern Arizona. This trail guide covers an area with 3 miles of trails.

Very enjoyable drive out to the trailhead. Plenty of sand on the wash beds so 4 wheel drive was a plus. The trail has great views and follows a ridge up to Quartz peak.
