The lovely and expansive South Mountain Park, part of the Phoenix Mountains Preserve, offers moderately challenging ascents, sweeping mountain and city views, and a wide range of Sonoran Desert plants and wildlife. You and your dog can start exploring this area with the Ranger Trail, a 1.5-mile scenic hike to the South Mountain National Trail. Though less busy than Phoenix’s Camelback Trail, this is a multi-use trail—leash rules apply and just make good sense. Pack out waste and pack in plenty of water.

A fairly easy hike. There is an incline but not very steep. The flowers were just starting to bloom which made for an array of colors.
