Because Piestewa Peak rises in the midst of Arizona’s largest metropolitan area, the trail to the top sees extremely heavy use, especially on weekends and in the evenings. It is, however, a worthwhile hike for anyone visiting Phoenix. The views of the surrounding city are outstanding, especially at sunset. Formerly called Squaw Peak, the prominent mountain was renamed after Lori Piestewa, a Hopi member of the National Guard who was killed in Iraq in 2003.
