North Mountain National Trail

North Mountain National Trail Professional Review and Guide

"The rugged peaks and rolling desert of Phoenix’s North Mountain Park once served as a popular campground for Indian School students and their families. The north central Phoenix area has changed, but the park remains a beautiful destination.

While this hiking-only trail is within one of the least traveled parks in the Phoenix Mountains Preserve system you should follow the leash rules both out of courtesy for other hikers and for your dog’s protection, since some segments of the hike pass through areas with abundant, albeit urban-adapted, wildlife."

"A fun moderate hike that traverses 2,104-foot North Mountain in north Phoenix."

"Short, steep, paved, and accessible nearly around the clock, the centrally located North Mountain National Trail offers Phoenix residents excellent daily exercise. It’s an ideal place for a quick workout any time of the day and well into the night. Imagine how much money you can save on gym memberships by incorporating this trail into your daily routine!

Most people hike to the summit and return along the paved service road, which is a fine route. North Mountain National Trail is actually a loop, however. The unpaved southern half of the trail sees much less traffic and offers fantastic south-facing views. Those who prefer a rugged hiking experience appreciate the unpaved and steeper southern route."
