Most Phoenicians know SRP as the folks who send the electric bill every month, but in the early 1900s local settlers didn’t worry about such newfangled stuff. They started the Salt River Project, using their land as collateral for a government loan, to build a much-needed water delivery system for their homes and crops. The loan was the first one granted under the auspices of the new National Reclamation Act in 1903, and both the dam and lake it created were named in honor of the U.S. president who helped make it possible, Theodore Roosevelt.
