This loop starts from the only Mazatzal trailhead accessible from a paved road and follows a trail up Deer Creek Canyon and down scenic Gold Ridge, where you’ll have 50-mile views of the Mogollon Rim country and the Tonto Basin. Hiking counterclockwise presents a lot of views as you descend Gold Ridge. The Deer Creek area burned in June 2004. Expect eroded trails and deadfall at higher elevations.
